Cultivating Connections: Farm to School in the K-6 Classroom

9:45 – 12:30  Digging Deeper: Morning Intensive Workshops

Classroom Focus:

Cultivating Connections: Farm to School in the K-6 Classroom

Learn how to connect schools and educators with the knowledge, tools and support necessary for integrating concepts of health, sustainability, food systems and farming/gardening into the core curricula and school culture. Presenters will engage participants in a hands-on activity while also sharing how Farm to School programs and sustainable, place-based education is reconnecting students with their local and community food systems. Together we’ll explore the promising practices around unit design and development, familiarize ourselves with the Understanding by Design process, look at how to connect these concepts to the Common Core and VT State Standards, and see examples of some of the great work fellow educators are doing throughout the State.

Presenters:

  • Danielle Pipher, Education & Professional Development Coordinator, Vermont FEED/Shelburne Farms
  • Ethan Bowdin, Educator & Curriculum Specialist, Vermont FEED/Shelburne Farms
  • Keenan Haley, 3rd Grade Teacher, Sharon Elementary School
